5 Core Values For Teens In Tang Soo Do

If you’re a teen training in American Tang Soo Do, you’re not just learning how to kick higher or punch faster you’re building the kind of character that actually matters in real life. School stress, friendships, identity, pressure, and expectations. Tang Soo Do gives you tools to handle all of it.

At the heart of your training are five core values that shape who you become on and off the mat: Resilience, Courage, Tenacity, Self‑Discipline, and Integrity.

1. Resilience: Getting Back Up Stronger

Every teen gets knocked down by grades, drama, mistakes, or just life being life.

Tang Soo Do teaches you how to rise again.

You learn resilience every time you,

Miss a technique but try again

Push through a tough class

Fail a belt test and come back stronger

Keep training even when life gets chaotic

Resilience isn’t about never falling. It’s about refusing to stay down.

2. Courage: Doing What’s Hard Anyway

Courage isn’t loud. It’s not about being fearless.

It’s about stepping forward even when you are scared.

You show courage when you

Spar with someone bigger

Perform forms in front of the class

Admit when you don’t understand something

Stand up for someone who needs support

Tang Soo Do teaches you that courage is a choice one you make every day.

3. Tenacity: Refusing to Quit

Tenacity is that stubborn fire inside you that says, “I’m not done yet.”

You build it when you,

Practice a kick 100 times until it’s clean

Keep stretching even when flexibility feels impossible

Train consistently through busy school weeks

Chase long‑term goals like black belt

Tenacity turns effort into achievement.

4. Self‑Discipline: Doing What Needs to Be Done

Self‑discipline is the quiet superpower of Tang Soo Do.

It shows up when you,

Arrive early and ready

Practice at home without being told

Control your emotions during sparring

Focus on technique instead of shortcuts

Self‑discipline is what separates “I want to be good” from “I am getting better.”

5. Integrity: Being the Same Person On and Off the Mat

Integrity means doing the right thing even when no one is watching.

You practice integrity when you,

Bow with respect

Help lower belts without showing off

Admit mistakes

Treat everyone such as classmates, instructors, friends with honesty and fairness

Integrity is the value that makes all the others real.

Why These Values Matter for Teens

These five values don’t stay on the mat, they follow you everywhere,

In school

In friendships

In sports

In your future goals

In how you see yourself

Tang Soo Do doesn’t just build martial artists.

It builds people who are strong, grounded, and ready for whatever life throws at them.

Your Journey Starts With Showing Up

Whether you’re a white belt or pushing toward black belt, you’re already building resilience, courage, tenacity, self‑discipline, and integrity every time you step on the mat.

Keep training.

Keep growing.

Keep becoming the strongest version of yourself.

Student Of The Month: Jacob

Student Of The Month: Jacob

The Edge Martial Arts family is proud to introduce this month’s Student of the Month Jacob, a recognition earned through dedication, heart, and steady growth. This month, we are excited to highlight Jacob, whose journey on the mats has been nothing short of inspiring. We are also looking forward to cheering him on at his upcoming competition in May. Below are a few words from his family.

Since beginning Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu in April 2022 at The Edge Martial Arts, Jacob has shown steady growth in confidence, discipline, physical ability, progressing through his belt ranks and earning his grey/black belt through consistent effort. This year, he also overcame his fear of competing by bravely entering a tournament in February, demonstrating resilience and a willingness to challenge himself. His training continues to strengthen his focus, coordination, and problem‑solving skills, and he consistently shows respect for instructors and classmates. Jacob’s progress has been greatly supported by Professor Prager and his team, whose guidance and dedication have made a meaningful impact on his development, something for which his parents are deeply grateful

5 Reasons Kids & Teens Should Join Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu

5 Reasons Kids & Teens Should Join Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu has become one of the fastest growing martial arts for young people and for good reason. It’s more than a sport, it’s a powerful tool for building confidence, discipline, and resilience in a world where kids and teens face new challenges every day. Whether your child is shy, energetic, athletic, or still finding their place, BJJ offers something uniquely transformative.

Here are five meaningful reasons BJJ is an incredible choice for kids and teens.

  1. Builds Real Confidence, On and Off the Mats

BJJ teaches kids how to stay calm under pressure, solve problems, and trust their abilities. Every technique learned and every challenge overcome gives them a sense of accomplishment that carries into school, friendships, and everyday life.

Why it matters:

  • Confidence grows through action
  • Kids learn they can handle tough situations
  • They develop a healthy sense of self‑worth
  1. Strengthens the Body in a Safe, Fun Way

BJJ is a full body workout disguised as play. Kids develop strength, coordination, balance, and flexibility. All while rolling, learning techniques, and having fun with teammates.

Physical benefits include:

  • Improved motor skills
  • Better posture and body awareness
  • Increased endurance and agility
  1. Teaches Discipline, Focus, and Respect

In a world full of distractions, BJJ gives kids a structured environment where focus and respect are part of every class. They learn to listen, follow instructions, and practice consistently. Skills that translate directly to school and home.

Parents often notice:

  • Better attention span
  • Improved behavior
  • Stronger work ethic
  1. Builds Friendships and a Supportive Community

BJJ academies are known for being welcoming, positive spaces. Kids and teens train with partners, learn teamwork, and become part of a community that celebrates effort and growth.

This helps them:

  • Making new friends
  • Feel included and supported
  • Develop social confidence
  1. Provides Practical Self‑Defense Skills

BJJ focuses on leverage, technique, and control, making it ideal for kids of all sizes. They learn how to protect themselves responsibly, avoid danger, and stay calm if confronted with conflict.

Most importantly:

  • It teaches awareness and prevention
  • Kids learn non‑violent ways to handle situations
  • They gain confidence without aggression

Final Thoughts

Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu gives kids and teens a foundation that lasts a lifetime. Confidence, discipline, resilience, and a strong sense of community. Whether your child wants to get active, build character, or simply try something new, BJJ is one of the most rewarding paths they can take.

The Edge Martial Arts family is proud to recognize Jax as our Student of the Month! His dedication and growth have been evident on the mat, and it’s been inspiring to watch his progress. Even more meaningful, his family has seen remarkable changes throughout his journey as well. Below is what they’ve shared about Jax’s development and transformation.

Jax began his journey at The Edge Martial Arts in 2023 when he was just six years old. Now, in 2026, at only nine years old, he is already a dedicated member of the Black Belt Team, Team Phoenix. A true reflection of his commitment, perseverance, and strong work ethic.

Over the past three years, Jax has shown tremendous growth, not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Through consistent training with Master Prager and the outstanding instructors at The Edge Martial Arts, he has developed essential life skills such as courage, discipline, teamwork, and self-defense. Most importantly, Jax has learned how to believe in himself both on and off the mat.

Jax’s participation in our leadership classes has further strengthened his independence and confidence. He approaches each challenge with determination and a positive attitude, inspiring everyone around him, including his parents and his little sister, who recently joined The Edge Martial Arts herself!

We are incredibly proud of Jax and all that he has accomplished so far. His journey toward earning his black belt is just beginning, and we are excited to watch him continue to grow, lead, and succeed.
